There are lots of things that you need to take with you on your mountain trip. Yet, at the same time, you need to pack light and be able to compact it. Your gear is just one category that you are going to be depending on.
This is an item you are going to want to make a good investment in. It has to carry a lot of items, yet be comfortable and lightweight.
Don’t count on finding some tree branches as trekking poles. You are going to be in the mountains here, not just some small forest.
Tent and Bedding
You need a simple lightweight tent and a down sleeping bag. Ideally for comfort you may want an inflatable pad to protect you from the ground.
Go with lightweight cooking items and purchase a lightweight backpacking stove. Water is going to be important, so make sure you have a 3 litre bladder. Also, carry some water filters with you.
Other items on the list that are going to be important include some type of item to start a fire, a knife and a headlamp. Take extra batteries and a trowel so you can bury your waste. Don’t forget the toilet paper, and some trash bags. And an emergency kit is a must.
Make a list of the clothing items you will need. It is highly important that you stay organized with your packing. You don’t want to be up a mountain and suddenly realize that you forgot something important.
You will want some toiletries, but be sensible about this, and only take those items that are necessary. You can buy travel sizes for your toothpaste, soap and shampoo. Don’t forget a towel.
No doubt you will want to cut down some of the costs that come with mountain camping, but don’t do this on important items. Your gear is critical to you safety and comfort.
If your first mountain camping trip is going to be with a seasoned mountaineer, then you are already on the right track. But if you are going by yourself or a bunch of novices, then make sure you do all your research first before setting out on this type of adventure.
The Slope’s Leeward Side
Always make it a rule no matter how big the mountain is, to try and set up on the leeward side of the slope. This will give you much better protection from the elements.
Have the Right Nutrition on Hand
You can go without a lot of food, but when you are at high altitudes, you need to make sure that you stay hydrated. This is where your water supply is going to be important. Also, especially if you are being quite active, you will need to keep your electrolytes up. This means you need potassium, and you can get a good supply of this from bananas. Two common complaints that mountain campers have, is they often get muscle cramps and suffer from headaches. The water and bananas can help ward this off.
You are going to want to travel light as you will be moving to different elevations as you explore the mountains. There are some extras that you should carry with you, namely stakes and rope for holding down your tent. Tie downs probably came with your tent, but with the excess winds that can occur in the mountains, this may not be enough.
Protect Your Skin
One item that many that are new to mountain camping tend to forget, is the sunscreen. Sunlight and intensity seems to be much stronger in the mountains, and believe it or not, you could end up with a sunburn, no matter what time of year. Another issue you may have to deal with is dry skin and lips. So make sure you take along a product that will help.
Hiking is an adventure no matter what kind of terrain you are going to do it in. If you are mountain hiking, then you might find the adventure even more exciting. But his will only be the case if you are well prepared for it.
Do Your Homework
It is nice to do things spontaneously, but mountain hiking is not one of them. You want to be well prepared, and make sure you plan your route as well as your entire trip. When you know your route, you will have a good idea of what to expect, and you will know what to wear, or pack if it is more than a day trip.
The Right Clothing
Even though you are hiking, you still need to be prepared for weather changes. Be sure to check the weather just before you start out, and also keep in mind the altitude that you will be at. The higher the altitude, the cooler it will be.
Most experts suggest that clothes for hiking should be made of synthetic materials. Even with your mountain hiking you will sweat, and this type of clothing will keep your dryer and more comfortable. Materials that are light and soft are the best choices.
While it might be nice and warm at ground level, once you start up the mountain it will get a lot cooler. For this reason you are going to want to wear pants.
As with any form of hiking, your footwear is going to be critically important. Wool is often what many seasoned mountain hikers choose. Your boots are something that you should be prepared to invest in. If they don’t fit right, you can bet that before long you will wish you were off the mountain. In addition to this, raingear, even if it’s a bright sunny day, is something you are going to want to have with you. The mountain weather can change within seconds.
There are many different ways that people can enjoy the massive number of mountains throughout the world. Some like to use them for hiking adventures. Others enjoy full expeditions. Then there are those who love to spend a weekend or more in a mountain cabin.
Most mountain cabins are available from organizations in the area of the mountains that have a selection of these to rent out. In these cases, they are usually well equipped with everything the vacationer is going to need, with the exception of food. The first thing to do when planning this type of mountain cabin excursion is to do some research about the area.
Once you have been able to find some cabin renters, before actually booking one, there are several things you are going to want to know….
- Is there electricity?
- What sort of washroom facilities are they?
- Is the bedding provided?
- What are the cooking facilities?
- Are there any special activities that are carried out on the mountains?
Knowing these things will allow you to be prepared as to what you need to take. Some of the cabins that are available will have all of the amenities you would have at home, while with others may not.
Make sure that you take the time to make a full list of what you are going to need, and re-check it then check it again, as you begin to pack up your vehicle before you head out for this exciting adventure.
Clothing choices are going to be important because you are hopefully going to be spending some time outside enjoying the mountain air. It is good to know ahead of time what activities you will be participating in so you can take the proper gear. For example, if you are going to be doing some mountain hiking, then you will want and need the appropriate clothing and gear for this.
